Located at Lock 13 on the Erie Canal near Fultonville, NY, the dam is designed to create a pool allowing river navigation during the warm months, and to allow for winter's debris and ice to flow through at spring time.
Although the overall structure may look like a truss bridge, there is no roadbed. Instead, winches located over the actual dam plates can raise or lower them as required.
