"This dial, 2.45 m across, has a meridian on each of its hour-lines. We note their distortion in the reference system made up of the hour-lines and the daily arcs of the dial.
.....
The dial bears the date of its construction, 1876, and the name of its builder Father Ildéphonse Récollet. It is only one of the dials to be found in this convent, but is is the most interesting, because Father Ildephonse traced the meridians of mean time on each of the hour lines with great care. He made the reading of the date easier with the help of a scale at five-day intervals on the extreme right and extreme left edges of the dial. Because of its large dimensions, the results of the readings are astonishingly accurate. We note the strange deformation of the medidians and also the fact that Father Ildephonse reserved the whole of the dial lying between the solstices for the indication of the mean time; he reduced the reading of the true time to that part of the dial located between the centre and the winter solstice.
The dial of Father Ildephonse is about the only one of its kind. Among the French dials is is indeed a beautiful piece for study and teaching."

The sundial has the following inscription:

TEMPS VRAI ET TEMPS MOYEN

Latitude 43,42.

1876

This translates to:

TRUE TIME AND AVERAGE TIME

Latitude 43.42.

1876

The lateral month graduations indicate the movement of the Sun in the Ecliptic. The Average Time that goes with clocks, is an 8 elongated between the Tropics. The only bright spot marks this time on the dotted lines since June 21 until 21 Dec. and on the corresponding lines on Dec. 21 until 21 June. The straight lines above the Winter Solstice mark True Time. - Father Ildephonse Récollet.

Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
