In the early hours of 30 September 1952, the minesweeper HMS Wave broke her moorings, during a heavy storm and ran aground.
In 2014 a memorial plaque was unveiled.

Some sixty years later, present for the unveiling ceremony of the memorial plaque were. Naval ratings who were serving on HMS Wave at the time and local residents, some of which assisted with the rescue, of the naval ratings.
History:-
It is believed that there was a problem with the propeller of the old minesweeper which, having broken its moorings, ran aground off St Ives, is believed to have washed up near the town. HMS Wave broke her moorings in St Ives in September 1952.
She was holed and flooded when she went ashore on rocks at Westcott's Quay near the Arts Club. The crew were evacuated and the ship was eventually winched off the rocks by two boom-defence vessels.The damaged hull was temporary repaired with wood and concrete and towed to Devonport (naval base Plymouth Devon) for assessment and repair.
