He was born on June 14, 1824 in Groton, NY and died on March 30, 1906 in Allegany, NY. He attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: WELCH, STEPHEN
• Rank and organization: Sergeant, Company C, 154th New York Infantry
• Place and date: At Dug Gap, Ga., 8 May 1864
• Entered service at: Allegany, Cattaraugus County, N.Y.
• Date of issue: 13 April 1894
Citation: Risked his life in rescuing a wounded comrade under fire of the enemy.
Armed Service: Army
