The Lace Up is a sculpture designed by Ilan Sandler. It was commissioned in 2011 for the Canada Games and installed in 2013. It consists of a collection of six shoe and skate laces of various sizes and colors. They are arranged to evoke a sense of freedom that one feels when using the Canada Games Oval, now called the Emera Oval.

A sign next to the sculpture is inscribed:

Lace Up
Artist: Ilan Sandler
June 1, 2013

Lace Up represents the sense of freedom that people feel
when using the Oval. Whether on skates, roller blades, or
on foot, people tend to trace elliptical paths when moving
around the Oval. This artwork uses their shoe and skate
laces to create aerial paths that capture the feeling of
weightlessness. The artwork’s arching forms invite viewers
to stand under the structure and explore its form while
sitting on the lace-like benches.

Commissioned by the Halifax 2011 Canada Games Host
Society and donated to the Halifax Regional Municipality
in appreciation of everyone who embraced the spirit of
the Canada Games.

The sculpture designed by Ilan Sandler and fabricated with the help of his team in Dartmouth, NS.
