Humboldt Grove (Humboldthain in German) is a small park in the heart of Brandenburg, a 1000 year-old town in Germany. With its nearby coffee shops and movie theaters and with the shores of River Havel just a few steps away, it is a popular family weekend destination.

For the last 50 years or more, parents didn't tell their children, "we are going for a stroll in Humboldt Grove". Instead, they said, "let's go and see the frog."

The frog pond and its fountain - a small concrete frog sitting on a water lily pad - have been installed in the late 1950s and the author of this waymark, born in Brandenburg in 1957 remembers countless weekends "visiting the frog".

In 1991, the structure had to be taken down as the almost 50 year-old plumbing became unstable. Spontaneous donations paid for the repairs and in 1994, the fountain - though still without a frog - was activated again. Then, in 2015, local sculptor Guido Raddatz created a new frog and restored to frog pond to its old beauty.

This may all sound a little bit sentimental, but to those, who grew up with the frog as kids it gives great pleasure to take their grandchildren to "go and see the frog."
