Steinway and Sons Of New York City made the instrument and case of this piano which was designed by Sir Lawence Alma-Tadema and manufactured at Johnstone, Norman & Co., London. The fallboard was painted by Edward Poynter.
The piano and stools are made of oak, cherry, ebony, boxwood, satinwood, cedar, hilly, ivory, coral, mother-of-pearl, abalone, copper, brass, silver, parchment, oil on cedar and modern upholstery. When first displayed in 1887 is was deemed the grandest piano ever made.
