He was born on September 3, 1830 in Hartford, NY and died on June 16, 1912 in Potsdam, NY. He attained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: WALLING, WILLIAM H.

• Place and date: At Fort Fisher, N.C., 25 December 1864
• Date of issue: 28 March 1892
Citation: During the bombardment of the fort by the fleet, captured and brought the flag of the fort, the flagstaff having been shot down.
