The Ekhof Theater in the west tower of the Schloss Friedenstein is considered to be the oldest baroque theater in the world with still existing and functioning stage machinery.

From 1775, the theater under Duke Ernst II was one of the first German court theaters to have its own permanent ensemble. The actors were officially employed by the court and received a fixed salary. From 1775 to 1778 Conrad Ekhof had the direction of this theater troupe, which brought the theater to its heyday with spectacular performances and made it an important center in the German theater scene.
