Wheal Coates probably one of the most picturesque locations for a mine workings.
One can only imaging the conditions the worker toiled under. With the prevailing wind and rain and of coarse the hot summers.
The site has many ruined structure in place and with the sites information and location plan visitors are able to read and see how the whole mining site was set up.
It is without wonder the effort which was put into extracting the ore, without any modern machinery, all done by hand.
The Wheal Coates mine opened in 1802 and was worked until its closure in 1889. It was re-opened for a short period between 1911 and 1913 when it was finally closed
Over its lifetime the mine produced 717 tons of tin and 335 tons of copper. The mine followed a seam of ore running out under the sea bed, but had to be abandoned when the seam proved to be unprofitable.
