The main station Gotha is the most important station of the Thuringian city Gotha. It is a stop for ICs and every two hours for ICEs on the Thuringian Railway.
Gotha railway station was established in 1847 when the railway line from Halle to Bebra in Hesse was built. At that time Gotha was the state capital of Saxony-Gotha and already had about 15,000 inhabitants. In the year 1870 the second railway line through Gotha was established, it leads over Mühlhausen to Leinefelde (there further to Göttingen). The third and last line at the Gotha railway station was the Ohratalbahn, which was built in 1876 to Ohrdruf and in 1892 to Würzburg to Gräfenroda.
