In the past there was a great need for sand and gravel for construction projects and road construction. Large holes have been dredged to meet this need. One of these sand dredging projects is Het Hilgelo in the area of Winterswijk-Meddo, directly on the border with Germany in the far east of the Netherlands.
The lake that has been created has an area of 74 ha. Now it is operated as a recreating lake by Leisurelands.
The water has a maximum depth that varies from 12 to 18 meters.
There is plenty to do at the lake, such as a dive site where you can dive to a delivery van at a depth of more than 10 meters.
There is plenty of food and drink for sale and there are also free toilets.
A special feature is that there has been a nudist beach here from the beginning. The sand beach gradually goes to a depth of 1.50 metres. There is a line in the water to warn the swimmers what the depth is were you can stand.
This beach is well protected against voyeurs and the water quality is generally good.
The beach is visited by quite a few nudists.
In total Het Hilgelo had 404.000 visitors in 2018. 40% of them are guests from Germany.
