The Champion Water Tower was built in 1897. It was used only for larger fires as the ladder must be manipulated by hand, a cumbersome process in an emergency. However, it could pump between 1500 and 3000 gpm. The Toledo Fire Department updated this machine in 1915 with a Christie Tractor on what had been the rear of the apparatus. This replaced the three horses previously required. It was in service through 1950.
