Claus von Stauffenberg was a German officer who on July 20, 1944 planted a bomb in a plot to assasinate Hitler. He and four of his closest associates were executed the same night at Berlin's Bendlerblock.

A plaque at the location of the execution lists the names of the five patriots. Stauffenberg's name is the third on the plaque.

Main Belt Asteroid 8171 Stauffenberg was discovered on Sept. 5 1991 by German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz Schmadel and named after the resistence fighter.
