The fountain was designed by Luigi Canina and built later between 1830 and 1834 to create some interest at the end of the long oak-lined avenue that leads into the park from Piazzale Flaminio. The fountain is composed of a basin with pieces of rocks. It is surmounted by a triumphal arch adorned on the sides by two draped female statues leaning against the pillars. There was once a statue of Aesculapius under the arch. At the top of the arch is an eagle, heraldic symbol of the Borghese family. A copy of the Aesculapius statue that replaced the original in 1986 is now in the Museum Pietro Canonica, also in the Villa Borghese Gardens.
