During the First World War, the artillery observation wagon travelled with the field artillery. Pulled by draft horses, the wagon contained the material necessary to build and secure a tower once an appropriate vantage point had been chosen by the officer commanding.

"The observation car consists of the limber and the rear, the actual observation car. It is pulled by six horses, with the riders riding on the saddle horses. The observation carriage includes five observation gunners in addition to the mounted driver. Of these, B1 - B3 serve the observation car, while B4 and B5 are responsible for the telephone".
