The Polish battalions based in Scotland during World War II were initially based in camps to the south-east of Glasgow until October 1940, when many moved to the east coast in the counties of Perthshire, Fife and Angus. Even the smallest of places had troops stationed there, including the small Angus town of Kirriemuir, which is remembered by a memento on the wall of the town library.
Just to the right of the entrance can be found a red shield with the Polish Eagle, with underneath, a metal plate inscribed with the following:
'A MEMENTO FROM THE POLISH TROOPS STATIONED AT KIRRIEMUIR 1940 - 1941'
The red sandstone library, attached to the town hall to the west, can be found north of the town centre on Reform Street.
