From an information panel on site:
This Canadian-made armoured ambulance was designed to protect medical personnel and the wounded they cared for.
Evacuating wounded soldiers from combat areas is an essential but dangerous task. Carrying four patients on stretchers, this armoured ambulance was intended to protect its occupants from shell fragments and small arms fire. General Motors of Canada and the Hamilton Bridge Company produced two ambulances based on an armoured truck design before production was cancelled at the end of the Second World War. This particular example, the first built, later served with British forces in the United-Kingdom and West Berlin during the Cold War. Its markings reflect the British Service.
