The former Railway Water Tower was constructed in 1885 for the Victorian Railways, there are four floors below the riveted wrought-iron tank each with a segmented-arched opening for loading aligned with the entry door.
In 1917 the water tower was purchased by Murtoa Water Trust as part of the town reticulation system. Since 1979 it has been the Historical Society's Museum and hoses one of the best taxidermy collections in Australia
