The Katherine Hot Springs sits above the Tindall Aquifier, a large artesian basin which provides water for the Katherine Region. This aquifier has minor shale beds that are interbedded with limestone, resulting in vertical groundwater flow. Solution cavities have resulted in collapses in the shale beds creating pathways for water to move between the adjoining limestones. This water flow is magnified in the Katherine area as the area is home to several cave systems.
