Almost 1000 years ago, Gudridur Thorbjanardottir and her husband Thorfinnur, sailed from Iceland to Greenland and on to Vinland in Canada, where they stayed for nearly three years. During their first year in Vinland, Gudridur gave birth to their son Snorri Thorfinnsson, the first child of European ancestry to be born in America.
Following their stay in Vinland, Gudridur returned to Greenland. From there, she travelled to Europe –– first to Norway, and later on a pilgrimage to Rome. Widowed, she spent her final years as a nun in Iceland. According to the Icelandic Sagas, Gudridur was "a woman of striking appearance" who played a major role in mapping a sea route to North America –– some 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

Il y a environ 1000 ans, Gudrigur Thorbjarnardottir et son mari, Thorfinnur, se rendirent en bateau de l’Islande au Groenland, puis dans le Vinland, au Canada, où ils passèrent près de trois ans. Au cours de leur première année dans le Vinland, Gurdridur donna naissance à leur fils Snorri Thorfinnsson, le premier enfant d’origine européenne à naître en Amérique.
À la suite de ce séjour dans le Vinland, Gudridur retourna au Groenland. De là, elle se rendit en Europe __ d’abord en Norvège puis en pèlerinage à Rome. Devenue veuve, elle passa ses dernières années comme religieuse en Islande. D’après les Sagas des Islandais, Gudridur était « un femme remarquable » qui contribua de façon importante à dresser la carte d’une route maritime vers l’Amérique du Nord __ quelque 500 ans avant Christophe Colomb.
