The Hill of Wirren lies on the southern edge of the Grampian Mountains in the county of Angus and is prominent from Strathmore to the south, being one of the higher hills in the area. The hill throws out many shanks, or ridges, from its flattish summit, including one to the east known as East Wirren.

This pillar lies on its summit area at 634 metres, nearly a mile from the pillar on the Hill of Wirren summit. The pillar is generally in good condition though a few cracks are noticeable near the base. The Hill of Wirren blocks off the view to the higher mountains to the north-west, but the view to the south is excellent over the lowlands as far as the border hills on a clear day, and the Angus Coast to the south-east.

STEEPNESS: A stiff climb from all directions, eased by the bulldozed tracks taking an easier line up the hillside.

TERRAIN: Bulldozed tracks cross the hill from various directions avoiding the need to navigate what is tough heathery ground.

ACCESSIBILITY: This being grouse shooting country, a myriad of bulldozed tracks navigate the hill from most directions, particularly from the south where the track reaches the summit and passes within feet of the pillar as it runs over the top. The pillar is three miles from the foot of Glen Lethnot to the south, and four miles from Glen Esk to the north.

NAVIGATION: The track makes finding the pillar in mist relatively easy from the south. Tracks from the northerly direction also cross the summit.

DANGER: Avoid during the grouse shooting season.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar
