He was born on November 3, 1837 in Quakertown, PA and died on May 21, 1890 in Philadelphia, PA. He originally was buried in Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA and when it closed in 1956 he was reinterred to Lawnview. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: THOMAS, HAMPTON S.

• Date of issue: 15 January 1894
Citation: Conspicuous gallantry in the capture of a field battery and a number of battle flags and in the destruction of the enemy's wagon train. Maj. Thomas lost a leg in this action.
