A Zippy the Pinhead comic strip ran on April 7, 2003 titled "Spare Us All" utilizing the Rip Van Winkle bowling alley sign in all four panes.
"Rip Van Winkle Lanes was located at 8154 North Trail in Sarasota just opposite the Sarasota-Bradenton airport from 1958-2004. It originally opened on August 7th, 1958. Dick Hubbard Jr. owned the center for 17 years, until its final closing May 4, 2004. It was always one of the area's highest-scoring centers, and in 1989. Dennis Stearns made headlines with and incredible state-record 877 series, capped by back-to-back 300's. "
Today it is a Bayside Pet Resort and Spa location.
Note: Two days later on April 9, 2003 another strip titled "Garden of Heedin" utilized small statues from a garden within walking distance just down the street from this location. (
