Highlands Hammock besides being one of the first state parks established in Florida is also home to one of the first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps established in Florida during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal Era.

The Hammock Inn is one of several CCC built buildings throughout the park that were constructed between 1934-1941. Its sits across from another CCC built building that houses the Florida Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and Memorial. Nearby are CCC built picnic shelters that can also be viewed .

Be sure to visit the CCC museum to learn more about the CCC's history and contributions in Florida. According to David J. W. Schmidt, curator of the Florida CCC Museum at Highlands Hammock State Park, ” The museum is the centerpiece of over 60 other CCC buildings and constructions in the eastern half of the park.

The original CCC project was to be the Florida Botanical Garden and Arboretum but was never finished. It was eventually merged with the existing Highlands Hammock Park created by John Roebling II in memory of his wife, Margaret Shippen Roebling. Mr. Roebling was the son and grandson of the builders the Brooklyn Bridge.”
