In the late 1980's the CCC Alumni approached the Florida Park Service with the idea of developing a CCC museum. On May 22, 1990 the governor and cabinet passed a resolution directing the Division of Recreation and Parks to work with the National Association of CCC Alumni to plan and develop a Florida Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and Memorial at Highlands Hammock State Park.

It is by no accident that Highlands Hammock State Park was chosen as the site of the museum and memorial. The first CCC camp in Florida was established in Sebring in April 1933. An abandoned nightclub served as the camp's headquarters. The CCC enrollees built the building that the museum is housed in along with the Hammock Inn (concession building), restroom/bath houses, roads, bridges, trails, and other improvements of the time. Later Highlands Hammock would become the first state park to be formed in Florida.

The museum, located in a 1939 CCC building, opened during the Ninth Annual CCC Festival on November 5, 1994. You will see displays of CCC memorabilia, photographs and examples of CCC workmanship. A video of original CCC footage takes you back to the 1930's and what life was like for the enrollees.
