The small town of Insch lies approximately 20 miles north-west of the city of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland. Surrounded by hills, including to the west, the Hill of Dunnideer with its ruined castle on the summit, which overlooks the town's golf course.

Originally a nine hole course with all the holes crammed into a small strip of ground, a purchase of land to the south in 1995 extended the course to eighteen holes. The opening two holes and final four, occupy the original land, with the remainder of the course covering the rolling newer ground. The course is just over 5,000 yards with a par of 69, with two par fives, including the long difficult 9th hole, and five short holes, including the final two holes. Despite its short length, the course features many dog-legs and tree-lined fairways.

The clubhouse was opened in 2003 and offers panoramic views to the west over the course from its upper windows.
