Eagle Lake, in Del City, Oklahoma, was formerly known as Thompson Lake. Del City acquired the property in 2000 as a back-up water supply and park. The park itself is on a peninsula shaped (more or less) like the head of an eagle, and the mascot and sports team name of Del City High School is an eagle, so "Eagle Lake" was unanimously selected from a list of fifty-five candidate names. A news article about the acquisition, renaming, and uses of the lake is
here.
The park provides restrooms, a pavilion and picnic area, a small playground, and boat ramps to serve the small lake. The lake is part of Oklahoma City's "Close To Home" fishing program, and fishing is allowed with a city permit. The lake supports populations of crappie, bass, catfish and gar. There is a modest fee to put your boat on the water. Del City has plans to dredge and rebuild a portion of the shoreline to form a swimming area, but swimming is not currently permitted at the lake. The park is also connected to Oklahoma City's extensive network of walking and biking trails.
