"The former abbey of Les Prémontrés de Jovilliers (PP) is located on the road from Ménil-sur-Saulx to Juvigny-en-Perthois (D129A).
The well is in the courtyard, next to the old abbey church.
It should be noted that although the well has existed since the 12th century, it only took this form in the 18th century.
It is remarkable for its size.
First, we see a magnificent wooden roof covered with slate in the shape of a dome called "à l'impérial" which rests on 4 stone columns.
In the centre, the octagonal coping is made of stone and a grid protects the inside of the well.
The wooden pulley is about sixty centimetres in diameter. A large iron chain was used to draw water. But there's no trace of the winch. Given the size of the pulley and chain, it is unlikely that the feeding was done simply by hand. The needs must have been considerable.
The entire well has recently been restored."
