The park opened on October 4, 1969 as Kulturpark Plänterwald in the GDR and was immediately popular. Its name changed to Spreepark after reunification in 1989, and attendance gradually dropped until the park had to close on November 4, 2001. The park has remained closed since, with sporadic and temporary access being granted for special events or filming. In 2014, the city purchased the property with plans to clean it up and make it usable by the public, but no work has been performed. Today, the 45-meter Ferris wheel, the remains of some rides, the miniature railroad tracks and various buildings can still be seen through the security fence surrounding the property.
