"Een Canadese kunstenaar heeft Arnhem de laatste weken opgeschrikt met informatietegels waar deels onzin op staat. Daarmee heeft hij ongetwijfeld gedacht dat hij met iets volkomen nieuws kwam. Helaas voor deze Michael Blum zijn gedenktekens met onwaarheden erop niets nieuws in Arnhem. Onder de John Frostbrug staat een leuk monumentje dat de bezoeker voorliegt.
Dat wil zeggen: de bezoeker die een beetje kan puzzelen. Een deel van de bronzen letters is van de zwerfkei die het gedenkteken is afgehaald of gevallen. Wie de verdwenen lettertekens weet aan te vullen, kan afleiden dat hier de eerste auto ooit in Nederland aan wal is gebracht. De Benz is daarna naar Den Haag gereden.
Haven
Het is niet aannemelijk dat het schip met de auto uit Duitsland precies op deze plek heeft aangelegd. Achter de zwerfkei, onder de oprit naar de Nelson Mandelabrug, lag tot na de Tweede Wereldoorlog de binnenhaven van Arnhem. Dat de ‘automobile’ iets verderop in de havenkom is gelost, is veel waarschijnlijker. Maar dat is een detail.
Belangrijker is dat de Haagse fotograaf Adolphe Zimmermans, die de auto had laten komen, niet de eerste Nederlandse automobilist was. Al in augustus 1895 reed een zekere Jos Bogaers in Tilburg al rond met een stoere bolide, die een duizelingwekkende snelheid van 20 kilometer per uur haalde. Dat staat duidelijk in kranten uit die tijd.
Potsierlijk
Dat maakt dit kunstwerkje aan de Rijnkade wel heel erg potsierlijk. Het is in 1996 met veel luister onthuld. Toenmalig burgemeester Paul Scholten heeft nog een rondje door de stad gereden in een replica van de Benz Victoria. Zo eentje als op het bronzen reliëf te zien is. Eigenlijk een soort koetsje zonder paard. Allemaal voor de kat zijn viool.
Waarom staat dit er eigenlijk nog? Al in 2008 vroeg De Gelderlander zich af of het monument de stad niet een beetje belachelijk maakt. Toenmalig wethouder Cees Jansen wilde daar echter niet aan. “Wie zegt dat het waar is wat in die oude kranten staat”, vroeg de CDA’er zich af. Zo kun je alle bronnen die niet bevestigen wat in je straatje past wel afkraken.
Vergeten
De zwerfkei is te zwaar om even weg te halen. Dus blijft het voorlopig liggen. Vergeten, zoals wel meer in deze stad. Het is een kunstwerk met een heel gek verhaal geworden… Daar kan Michael Blum een puntje aan zuigen."

"A Canadian artist has startled Arnhem in recent weeks with information tiles that partly contain nonsense. In doing so, he undoubtedly thought that he had come up with something completely new. Unfortunately for this Michael Blum, his memorials with untruths on them are nothing new in Arnhem. Under the John Frost Bridge there is a nice little monument that lies to the visitor.
That means: the visitor who can puzzle a bit. Some of the bronze letters are from the boulder that has been removed or fallen from the memorial. Anyone who knows how to complete the missing characters can deduce that this is the first car ever brought ashore in the Netherlands. The Benz then drove to The Hague.
Port
It is not plausible that the ship from Germany has moored at exactly this spot by car. Behind the boulder, under the driveway to the Nelson Mandela Bridge, was the inner harbour of Arnhem until after the Second World War. It is much more likely that the 'automobile' was unloaded a little further into the harbour basin. But that is a detail.
More importantly, the Hague photographer Adolphe Zimmermans, who had sent for the car, was not the first Dutch motorist. Already in August 1895 a certain Jos Bogaers drove around in Tilburg with a sturdy car, which reached a dizzying speed of 20 kilometres per hour. This is clearly stated in newspapers at the time.
Ludicrous
That makes this work of art on Rijnkade very ludicrous. It was unveiled with great pomp in 1996. Former mayor Paul Scholten drove another tour of the city in a replica of the Benz Victoria. The one that can be seen on the bronze relief. Actually a kind of carriage without a horse. All for the cat are violins.
Why is this still there? Already in 2008 De Gelderlander wondered if the monument doesn't make the city a bit ridiculous. Alderman Cees Jansen didn't want to do that. "Anyone who says that what's in the old newspapers is true," the CDA member wondered. This way you can break down all sources that do not confirm what fits in your street.
Forgotten
The boulder is too heavy to take away. So for the time being it will stay there. Forgotten, like more in this city. It has become a work of art with a very crazy story... Michael Blum can make a point of that."
