"The most famous prisoner was the Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky. He had the prisoner no. 562.
Carl von Ossietzky was born on October 3, 1898 in Hamburg.
He was editor of the newspaper "Die Weltbühne". Again and again he wrote against oppression and war.
After the Reichstag fire in 1933, Hitler had Carl von Ossietzky arrested and taken to the Sonnenburg concentration camp.
Later he was transferred to Esterwegen. From 1933 to 1936 Carl von Ossietzky was imprisoned in Esterwegen.
When he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935, he was not allowed to accept it personally. In 1936 he was released.
The time in the camp has greatly weakened Ossietzky. On May 4, 1938, he died as a result of concentration camp imprisonment. The University of Oldenburg today bears the name "Carl von Ossietzky University"."
