Au début du 13ème siècle, Dame Aufrédy et son époux ont fondé le premier hôpital de La Rochelle, l’aumônerie Barthélémy. Ce couple de négociants fortunés pensait avoir tout perdu après une expédition échouée. Pourtant, les navires finirent par revenir. De nouveau riches, Alexandre et Pernelle ont décidé de se consacrer aux pauvres dont ils avaient partagé la condition.
Cette histoire incarne des valeurs qui sont celles de l’établissement et celles de tous les hospitaliers : solidarité, fraternité, humilité, tolérance."

"Why Pernelle Aufrédy?
At the beginning of the 13th century, Dame Aufrédy and her husband founded the first hospital in La Rochelle, the Barthélémy chaplaincy. This affluent merchant couple thought they had lost everything after a failed expedition. Yet the ships eventually returned. Rich again, Alexandre and Pernelle decided to devote themselves to the poor of whom they had shared the condition.
