Dans les jardins de l'Elysette, côté Meuse, se trouve une statue en bronze de Jean-Michel Folon appartenant à sa série « L’homme », celle-ci s’intitule : « Quelqu?un ».
Le Personnage
Principal personnage de l’œuvre de Folon, l’homme au chapeau est un héros universel. Né du désir de l’artiste d’animer et de donner une échelle à ses premiers dessins de villes (une déformation professionnelle peut-être puisqu’avant de quitter la Belgique en 1955, il avait débuté des études de dessin industriel), ce personnage est réduit à sa plus simple expression : deux points à la place des yeux, un trait à la place de la bouche, un grand chapeau qui lui évite de dessiner des cheveux, et enfin un grand manteau bleu qui lui épargne le souci de lui trouver une garde-robe. Et s’il ne nous est pas inconnu ce personnage, c’est parce qu’il nous rappelle d’autres hommes au chapeau, comme celui de Magritte ou encore celui des films de Chaplin. Il y a une universalité de l’homme moyen, du Monsieur Tout le Monde auquel chacun peut s’identifier. Chez Folon, comme il l’était déjà chez ses prédécesseurs, il est le plus souvent empreint d’une profonde solitude, égaré dans les méandres des grandes villes, ou assis tout seul devant la mer, nous rappelant qu’au fond, on est toujours tout seul, en particulier dans notre dialogue avec une œuvre d’art. Il lui arrive cependant de se démultiplier jusqu’à la Foultitude (1969), car c’est bien l’humanité toute entière qu’il représente. Nul n’est plus banal que lui, et pourtant il est capable de tous les exploits, en premier lieu celui de s’envoler. Et cet homme qui s’envole, ne serait-ce pas Folon, ou plutôt son alter ego réalisant son rêve ?

Het karakter
De hoofdpersoon in Folon's werk, de man met de hoed is een universele held. Geboren uit de wens van de kunstenaar om zijn eerste stadstekeningen te animeren en een schaal te geven (een professionele vervorming misschien omdat hij in 1955, voordat hij België verliet, was begonnen met een studie industriële design), is dit personage gereduceerd tot zijn eenvoudigste expressie: twee punten in plaats van ogen, een lijn in plaats van een mond, een grote hoed die hem belet om haren te tekenen, en tot slot een grote blauwe jas die hem de moeite ontziet om een kast te vinden. En als dit personage ons niet onbekend is, dan is dat omdat het ons doet denken aan andere mannen met een hoed, zoals Magritte of de films van Chaplin. Er is een universaliteit van de gemiddelde man, van de heer iedereen met wie iedereen zich kan identificeren. Bij Folon, zoals hij al bij zijn voorgangers was, wordt hij meestal gekenmerkt door een diepe eenzaamheid, verdwaald in de meanders van grote steden, of alleen voor de zee, waardoor hij ons eraan herinnert dat we op de bodem altijd alleen zijn, vooral in onze dialoog met een kunstwerk. Maar soms vermenigvuldigt het zich tot de Foultitude (1969), omdat het inderdaad de hele mensheid vertegenwoordigt. Niemand is banaler dan hij, en toch is hij in staat tot alle prestaties, in de eerste plaats dat van het wegvliegen. En hoe zit het met deze man die wegvliegt, is het niet Folon, of liever zijn alter ego, die zijn droom realiseert?

The character
The main character in Folon's work, the man in the hat is a universal hero. Born from the artist's desire to animate and scale his first urban drawings (a professional distortion perhaps because he had begun a study of industrial design in 1955, before leaving Belgium), this character has been reduced to his simplest expression: two points instead of eyes, a line instead of a mouth, a large hat that prevents him from drawing hair, and finally a large blue coat that makes it worthwhile for him to find a cabinet. And if this character is not unknown to us, it is because it reminds us of other men wearing hats, such as Magritte or the films of Chaplin. There is a universality of the average man, of Mr. anyone with whom anyone can identify. At Folon, as he was with his predecessors, he is usually characterized by a deep loneliness, lost in the meanders of big cities, or just for the sea, reminding us that we are always alone at the bottom, especially in our dialogue with a work of art. But sometimes it multiplies to the Foultitude (1969), because it does indeed represent the whole of mankind. No one is more trivial than he is, and yet he is capable of all the achievements, first and foremost that of flying away. And what about this man who flies away, isn't it Folon, or rather his alter ego, who realizes his dream?
