"TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- The Sunflower State is now part of the National Purple Heart Trail.
"Friday morning, Governor Sam Brownback declared Kansas a Purple Heart State. He met with veterans who have received the Purple Heart medal, as well as families whose loved ones were killed in action.
"Army Lt. Colonel Erick Campbell said the Purple Heart is an award no one ever wants to receive.
'"Today recognizes the families and the pain they suffer that they will never, ever forget. What this ceremony does today is to remind people that those that have suffered are still out there and we recognize that suffering," he said.
"Topeka joins Holton and Jackson County on the Purple Heart Trail, which is a symbolic and honorary system that gives tribute to those who have been awarded the medal.
"Kansas is now one of 14 states in the nation to have the honor." ~ WIBW, channel 13, By Sarah Plake, August 22, 2014
