The small town of Nimmitabel lies at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range at an elevation of 1,070 metres, and at the western end of the Monaro Range. So within a few kilometres of the town there are several river's headwaters.
The sign is at the southern entry, on the Monaro Highway.
