A vertical printed sign, within a recycled plastic frame, details the following information about the historical Mill of Nimmitabel:

The Old Mill #3
"Built by John Geldmacher, a naturalised German settler.

"In 1865 he began to assemble materials. During the next seven years he laboured, almost unaided, on the construction.

"The work was completed in 1872. The mill was then ready for use.

"The mill was intended as a flour mill. Wind driven.

"Soon after completion he was informed he could not operate the mill as it was in a prescribed distance of a public road.

"It was alleged that the shadows of the mill fans would frighten the horses when passing along the roads.

"Whether or not the mill functioned as a windmill is still the subject of research.

"Subsequently Geldmacher removed the wooden wings and connected it to horse power.

"It has been stated by many old residents 'That some fine flour was produced'.

"At some future date Gelmacher (sic) converted the flour mill to a timber mill.

"By 1885 the mill seems to have ceased.

"In 1961 restoration works were commenced."

The Community Centre
"Built in 1913 the building was formerly the bush nursing home.
"John Geldmacher left money for the establishment of a private hospital.
"The building is built of timber with a verandah and bay windows.
"The entrance was originally from the front.
"When the verandah was enclosed the entrance was moved to the side.
"The bush nurse lived in the residence. One room was for the patients.
"When the hospital side was closed the bush nurse still attended to local needs of the community.
"The bush nursing closed in the 1970's.
"The building is used for community services to the town."

As may be assumed, this is one of a series of Historical Markers in Nimmitabel, but I didn't track each and every one down.
