On April 19, 1775 the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired on Lexington Green. This monument honor the colonial minutemen who engaged a force of British regulars that day. The American Revolution ended with the surrender of the British at Yorktown, VA in 1781 and formalized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783 when the boundaries between the British Empire in North America and the United States were established.
The front of the monument contains a 3' by 6' by 1' oval relief sculpture depicting six minutemen during the Battle on the Lexington on Lexington Town Green. Five men are firing rifles and a sixth is seated on the ground with his left leg outstretched, apparently wounded. The relief is affixed to a 2' by 8' by 3' stepped granite base.
The base of the sculpture is inscribed:
THESE MEN GAVE EVERYTHING DEAR IN LIFE, YEA AND LIFE ITSELF IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMON CAUSE
The front of the granite base is inscribed:
MEMORIAL TO THE LEXINGTON MINUTE MEN OF 1775
The back of the monument is inscribed:
