Bob Palmer was formerly an art professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, teaching the art of mural painting. He and his students have painted murals all over Oklahoma and beyond, and it's always a pleasure to discover one in some small rural town.
At the time of this posting, the retired Bob Palmer has opened an artists' co-op called Red Dirt Art Gallery in this vintage service station. He and other artists have covered the building with murals. This mural is painted on the concrete block west wall of the station. It shows a variety of scenes from the local area.
On the right is the Deep Fork River with children and a dog floating on a raft, playing "pirates". In the background cars are driving down iconic Route 66 with a truss bridge. Framed insets show the old Wellston Hotel, and the water tower. Vintage cars are shown on the canted corner, above the entrance.
We have recently learned that Bob Palmer and his art gallery will be moving from this location in the summer of 2019, to open a gallery in Oklahoma City. These murals, of course, will remain with the building and it will be interesting to see who the next tenant is.
