You don't often see a CENEX sign on a grain elevator, but we found one in Powell, Wyoming.

One of several elevators in Powell, this one is a bit unusual, sort of a Siamese Twin, joined at the head - two side by side elevators connected by a walkway at the elevator head.

We believe the reason for the CENEX sign would be that it is part of the Big Horn Co-op Marketing Association, a farm products outlet established in 1923 which provides a range of agricultural products, including feed, seed and fertilizer, which is where an elevator enters the scene. Across the street, on South Bent Street at East North Street, is the retail and petroleum products outlet for the operation.

As for the elevator's history, nothing has been found as yet, beyond the fact that the first elevator in Powell was opened on December 10, 1917. That probably wasn't this one.
