Fleringer Es
One of the best known and oldest trees in the Netherlands, is the Kroezeboom on the Fleringer Es, south of Tubbergen and north of Fleringen in the province of Overijssel. It is estimated that the tree was planted between 1500 and 1600 as a 'loak tree' or a border marker tree. The pedunculate oak is sometimes estimated to be older but is in all likelihood between 400 and 500 years old. This makes it one of the oldest oak trees in the Netherlands.
During the Reformation period there were secret meetings of the Catholic population at the Kroezeboom, where they attended mass until around 1730. The chariot on which the altar and priest were transported served as a pulpit. These masses were dedicated by the itinerant arch priest Henricus Smithuis. According to information there was a field chapel near this Kroezeboom in the 16th and 17th centuries, the hilligen huesken. Even after the demolition of the chapel, this remained a holy place for the Catholics in the area.
In 1909, at the centenary of the return of the Saint Pancratius church, a procession was held to the Kroezeboom where a new chapel was built dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Christ. In 1916, the ground on which the Kroezeboom stands in a radius of 20 meters measured from the heart of the tree was donated to the Sint-Pancratius parish of Tubbergen. Until the Second World War, masses were held every year in the summer at Kroezeboom.
For about ten years, participants in the peace cycle tours have gathered at the Kroezeboom to conclude the peace week. Every year for three days in Fleringen folk festivals are held, which is called the 'Kroezeboomfeesten'
