Markets have been held in Stoke for more than 200 years.

The first one in the town dates from 1794, in Hill Street, and this was replaced by a later market in nearby Hide Street in 1835.

Around the late 1850s, the market was moved to the ground floor of the then new Town Hall, in Glebe Street.

Then, in 1883, it was relocated to a larger, purpose-built building in Church Street, the building that went up in flames in 1982. After the fire a new market was built nearby in 1984 and the area surrounding both paved over.

Since then a new library has been built around the base of the clock tower.
