This is lock La Noue on the Canal d'Accolay. It only has a rise of 0.8 metres and the remote location adds to its prettiness. The bridge at the entrance is quite ornate too.
The canal was opened in 1880 and provided a link from Vermenton to the Canal du Nivernais at Bazarnes. The Canal du Nivernais was opened in 1842 and linked the Loire to the Seine via the navigable River Yonne at the Seine end.
The canal is very short compared with most canals as it is only 3.8 kilometres in length.
