"Owego Heritage The area between William Street to the Owego Creek is known as Canawana, a native American name meaning Little Living Water. The land was purchased in the 1830s by the Johnson Family from Connecticut who planned to make it a manufacturing center.

One of the first things built was a grist mill and hydraulic canal 7/8 mile long to supply water power for the mill. Two to three hundred men were hired to dig the ditch. Also, a large stable housed the horses for the project. A small general store was built at the corner of Main and Division Streets that later became a tavern. East of that was another store called Indian Spring Grocery.

By the middle of the century this area contained a Grist Mill, Saw Mill, Sheepskin Tannery, Axe Factory, Pail and tub Factory, Clock Factory, Soap Factory, Wool & Carding Mill, Shoemakers & various small businesses. As technology and transportation advanced, the factories closed and Canawana finally evolved into the quiet, quaint part of Owego of today."
