The plaque reads:

THIS BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED BY THE TOWN
OF VEGREVILLE IN THE YEARS, A.D. 1972-73, UNDER
THE JOINT WINTERWORKS PROGRAM OF THE
GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND THE GOVERNMENT
OF ALBERTA.

THE COMPLEX, CONTAINING ADMINISTRATIVE
OFFICES, COUNCIL CHAMBERS, POLICE OFFICES AND
A PUBLIC LIBRARY, IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE
CONFIDENCE OF THE CIVIC GOVERNMENT OF THE
TOWN AND ITS CITIZENS IN THE FUTURE OF
VEGREVILLE. IT IS ALSO A TANGIBLE TRIBUTE TO
THE PIONEERS, OF DIVERSE ETHNIC ORIGINS, WHO
FIRST SETTLED HERE AND TO ALL WHO FOLLOWED
AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF
THIS TOWN.

OFFICIALLY OPENED BY
THE HONOURABLE PETER LOUGHEED
PREMIER OF ALBERTA
OCTOBER 18, 1973

A walking tour brochure indicates that before Town Hall, the site was the location of the town’s 2nd tennis court. The building has offices for Town administration, Town council, RCMP offices and
community groups.

Peter Lougheed served as the tenth Premier of Alberta from 1971 to 1985. According to The Canadian Encyclopedia (https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/edgar-peter-lougheed), when he took charge of his Progressive Conservative Party, they did not have a single seat in the legislature. In 1967 Lougheed was elected to the legislature with the largest majority of any candidate. He and five other Conservative candidates formed the official opposition. In the next election (1971) Lougheed's Conservatives were swept into office with 49 of the legislature's 70 seats. In each of the following elections of 1975, 1979 and 1982 Lougheed and his party increased both their popular vote and their majority.
