St. Peter and Vincula Church
The name ‘Stoke’ comes from an Old English word
meaning ‘a place’, signifying a holy place. A Saxon
cross survives in the churchyard, suggesting that this
was an ancient sacred site. The first wooden Church
was replaced in the year 805. Early 19th Century
illustrations of Stoke Old Church show a stone-built
structure which mostly dates from the 13th Century,
with the addition of a 14th Century tower. Gargoyles
from this church were later incorporated in a
terrace of houses in the adjacent Brook Street.

By the 1820s, Stoke Church was no
longer large enough to accommodate
its growing congregation. In 1826
the foundations were laid for the
present Church, to be finally
consecrated in 1830. The
graves of Josiah Wedgwood
(1730-1795) and Josiah
Spode I (1733-1797)
can both be found in
the churchyard.
There is a leaflet to go with the trail which has the following introduction.
"Welcome to the town of Stoke, one of the six towns that make up the City of Stoke-on-Trent. This heritage trail is a self-guided walking tour around Stoke, taking in some of the most significant places of historical interest in the town. The trail can be started at any point, and is easily accessible for most visitors. You can follow the trail using this leaflet and the interpretation ‘paddles’ which are located around the town. Look out for the pedestrian signs which will point you in the direction of the heritage trail". link

The paddles are on top of poles and are made of grey metal. The titles are inscribed in yellow lettering, whilst the information is in white lettering.

This paddle is number three on the trail of 9 locations, it stands at a junction of paths in the grave yard of the church.

In the year 2000 a new community mosaic was unveiled in the Churchyard to mark the new millennium. The mosaic was based on the designs of pupils from St Peter’s and Mount Pleasant Primary Schools, and depicts images of the local coal, steel and mining industries, wildlife in the Churchyard, aspirations for the future and a memorial to football legend, Sir Stanley Matthews
