In 2002, this Centennial Plaza and clock tower was constructed and sponsored by the Alumni Foundation of SWOSU. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of this school.
* Originally founded in 1901 by decree of the Oklahoma Territory Legislature, it was called Southwestern Normal School.
* In 1920, the school became Southwestern State Teachers College.
* In 1939, Southwestern State College of Diversified Occupations
* in 1941, Southwestern Institute of Technology
* In 1949, Southwestern State College, and
* In 1974, Southwestern State University
The plaza consists of a rectangular grassy area just east of the Al Harris Library on E. Campus Drive. At the center is a two-story brick clock tower supported by large brick columns, with four clock faces beneath cross roof gables. A circular concrete patio with donated bricks is located beneath the tower, with four short paths leading in all four directions. A low, curved brick wall reads: CENTENNIAL PLAZA. This is quite an endeavor, and very visually attractive.
