Tom has received a letter telling him that his father has been wounded in the war. He takes off on a contemplative walk with Julie following behind. They meet with some gypsies in the woods and later hear machine gun fire coming from a ruined castle. Tom and Julie enter the castle and find Mr Norris, the inventor, working on a synchronised aircraft machine gun. Tom helps the inventor with his experiments and accidently leaves his penknife there. Om their way home Tom realises he has left his penknife and returns to the castle.

Meanwhile, a German army spy, Keller, has broken into the castle and rendered Mr Norris unconscious. Tom and Mr Norris are put into a dungeon by Keller. Julie manages to escape and tries to get help from the gypsies. Unfortunately the gypsies are working for Keller and they take Julie to the dungeon as well. Later, when one of the gypsies enters the dungeon, Tom manages to escape.

Stan meets up with a downed aircraft nearby and helps to mend one of the control wires. He offers Stan a flight, which he takes up. Whilst on the flight Stan notices Tom. The aircraft lands and Tom replaces Stan on the plane. They take off in pursuit of Keller, Norris, Julie and the gypsies, who are in Norris’s car heading for the coast. Tom and the pilot land ahead of the car and ambush the car by putting a cart in the road. Keller makes off and steals the plane. He tries to strafe Tom and the pilot but instead shoots off the propeller and crashing the plane.
