"Four months after Whittier’s Design Review Board members approved an In-N-Out and Raising Canes despite concerns the architecture was too corporate, the same question was before them again Thursday.

Only this time, it was over an existing Taco Bell at 13008 Whittier Blvd. where the owners want to remodel the building and make it adhere to the chain’s signature architectural style.

Still, Taco Bell apparently has agreed to many of the changes city officials want, including more of a Spanish revival design the board requested.

It wasn’t the board that raised the issue but rather city staff.

“Our concern was over what happened with Raising Canes and In-N-Out,” Conal McNamara, director of community development, said in a Friday telephone interview. “We’re conscious of the fact the Design Review Board is concerned with having the architecture be too corporate.”

In the meeting, Sonya Lui, principal planner for the city, told the board she had suggested a Spanish-revival design to Taco Bell. “We wanted the architect to have a more traditional architecture style found in Whittier and less of a corporate design,” Lui said."
