In the centre of the North Island lies the Tongariro National Park, with three volcanic mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. At Whakapapa Village on the lower slopes of Ruapehu, a walking track leads to Silica Springs. The track climbs through native beech forests, alpine bogs and tussock to reach the Silica Springs and Rapids. After climbing up from the bush at Golden Rapids, the track emerges onto an area of alpine wetland with information signs. A boardwalk has been built to assist in crossing this area and protect the natural swampy area of wire rush, tangle fern and red tussock. Seepage ponds beside the boardwalk are home to freshwater crayfish (koura). The boardwalk makes walking over swampy ground more comfortable and reduces the impact of foot traffic on delicate vegetation. This open area is also a great place to enjoy mountain views. There are more sections of boardwalk further up the track and around the actual Silica Springs area.

Trail Start and Parking:
S 39° 12.215 E 175° 32.430 Silica Rapids Walk is signposted on Bruce Road. The track crosses the Whakapapanui Stream bridge and heads west.
The track is a loop track and you may choose to return via the Bruce Rd.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 500
